Benefits of Heat Pumps Hot Water System
Heat pumps for hot water systems offer several benefits, making them an energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly choice for heating water. Here are some of the key advantages of heat pump hot water systems:
Energy Efficiency
Heat pumps are exceptionally energy-efficient because they transfer heat from the surrounding air or ground into the water instead of producing heat directly. As a result, they can deliver the same amount of hot water while consuming much less electricity than traditional electric resistance heaters.
Environmental Friendly
Heat pumps produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional water heaters that burn fossil fuels. This makes them a more environmentally friendly choice and can help reduce your carbon footprint.
Cost Savings
Due to their energy efficiency, heat pump hot water systems can lead to lower energy bills over time. While they may have a higher upfront cost, the savings on energy expenses can offset the initial investment.
Renewable Energy Integration
Heat pumps can be easily integrated with renewable energy sources like solar panels, making it possible to heat water using clean, renewable energy, further reducing environmental impact.
Long Lifespan
Heat pump hot water systems typically have a longer lifespan compared to traditional water heaters. They are designed to be durable and can last for 10-15 years or more with proper maintenance.
Consistent Hot Water Supply
Heat pumps can provide a consistent supply of hot water, as they are not dependent on fuel availability or storage tank size. This can be particularly advantageous for households with varying hot water demands.
Quiet Operation
Heat pump water heaters operate quietly, without the noise associated with some other types of water heaters, such as tankless or tank-type electric resistance heaters.
Low Maintenance
Heat pumps require minimal maintenance, mainly consisting of periodic cleaning of air filters and coils. This makes them a convenient choice for homeowners.
Versatility
Heat pumps can be used in various climates and locations, as they are available in both air-source and ground-source (geothermal) models. They can work efficiently in cold or hot climates, making them a versatile option.
Government Incentives
In many regions, governments offer incentives, rebates, or tax credits for installing energy-efficient heat pump hot water systems. These incentives can help offset the initial cost. *AA Plus Pty Ltd participates in the VEU Program through its business partners who are Accredited Persons.
Hot Water Rebate Program
Take advantage of government rebates of up to $3,000 for hot water heat pumps in Victoria and significantly reduce your energy costs. Upgrade your old electric or gas hot water system to a highly efficient SLA 300L electric hot water heat pump starting at just $799.00, or opt for $0 upfront payment options.
The hot water rebate provides Victorian households up to $1000 to assist with the purchase of an eligible heat pump or solar hot water system.
Not-for-profit community housing providers are also eligible to apply for the rebate on behalf of their tenants.
Eligibility
As a Victorian householder, you could receive a hot water rebate if:
- you are the owner-occupier of an existing property where the system is to be installed
- the household taxable income of all owners combined is less than $210,000 per year
- the value of the property is under $3 million
- the property address has not already received a hot water or a solar battery rebate under the Solar Homes Program
- the hot water system to be replaced is at least 3 years old from the date of purchase
- you received a Solar Homes rebate and/or loan but have moved house. You can apply for another incentive at your new address as an owner-occupier if the property has not received these rebates before.
You must work with an authorised hot water retailer and use only eligible products.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of switching to an energy-efficient heat pump system?
Switching to a heat pump water heater can significantly reduce your energy consumption compared to a traditional electric storage water heater. Heat pumps only use electricity to power the compressor and fan, unlike electric systems that directly heat water using an element. source: https://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/.
With heat pump systems, you can enjoy energy savings of up to 80% while reducing your carbon footprint. What’s more, our systems work efficiently around the clock—rain, hail, or shine—without the need for additional solar panels.
How does a hot water heat pump system work?
Heat pump systems operate using advanced technology that’s similar to how an air conditioner or refrigerator works, but in reverse. Here’s how:
- A fan draws in ambient air, which contains natural heat.
- The heat converts the refrigerant inside the system into gas.
- A compressor pressurizes the gas, generating heat that’s then used to warm the water stored in the tank.
- Once the heat is transferred, the gas reverts to a liquid, and the process starts again.
This innovative process ensures energy-efficient hot water, no matter the weather conditions.
Why does my current system need to be installed outside? What’s the cost of relocating it to an outdoor location?
Heat pumps rely on proper airflow to function efficiently—similar to split-system air conditioners—which is why they are typically installed outdoors.
If your current system needs to be relocated outdoors, the relocation costs typically range between $499 and $999. This includes re-routing water and electrical connections, which may vary depending on the distance and roof access required. Rest assured, AA Plus Energy will ensure the process is smooth and hassle-free.
What is the Solar Victoria Hot Water Rebate?
The Solar Victoria Hot Water Rebate is part of the Victorian Government’s initiative to promote energy-efficient upgrades. Eligible households can access rebates to replace old hot water systems with efficient heat pump systems. Learn more by watching our quick explainer video:
How do I apply for the Solar Victoria Rebate?

Use our form to apply.
Can I upgrade to a heat pump if I currently have a gas hot water system?
Absolutely! If you have an outdated electric or gas hot water system, upgrading to a heat pump is a smart, energy-efficient choice. Government rebates make it even more affordable to make the switch. Contact our team to learn how you can benefit from these incentives.
What rebates are available for heat pump hot water systems in Victoria?
Victorian households can take advantage of three key rebates for upgrading to heat pump systems:
- Federal Government Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs): These rebates act like a discount at the point of purchase, with values up to $1,040 for eligible installations.
- Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs): Depending on your location, VEECs can provide rebates ranging from $1,540 to $1,680.
- Combined Rebates: Victorians receive some of the highest combined incentives in Australia. For instance, upgrading from an old electric water heater in metropolitan areas can fetch rebates up to $2,580, and up to $2,720 in regional areas.
How does an electric heat pump reduce my energy bills?
Heat pumps allow you to avoid the fluctuating costs of gas and rely instead on efficient electricity usage. For households using LPG or traditional electric heating, switching to a heat pump can result in significant energy savings over time, reducing your monthly bills while helping the environment.
How does an electric heat pump help reduce my carbon footprint?
Heat pumps are far more energy-efficient than older systems like electric boilers or gas heaters. By utilizing renewable energy from the air, they significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This means you’re contributing to a greener future while enjoying reliable heating and hot water.
Who qualifies for free government heat pump systems in Victoria?
To qualify for the Solar Homes Program, you must:
- Be an owner-occupier of a property valued under $3 million.
- Have a combined household taxable income below $210,000 per year.
- Ensure the system being replaced is at least three years old.
